Things you should know about Lasqueti.

Lasqueti is largely undeveloped and of the most unique of the Gulf Islands. It lies in the Georgia Strait, north of French Creek (on Vancouver Island), and southwest of Texada Island. It is approximately 8 km wide (4.9 miles) and 22 km (13.6 miles) long, with an area of 73.56 km2. About 360 permanent residents call Lasqueti home. It is accessible by foot passenger ferry service only, or by private boat or plane.

False Bay, the location of the island's ferry dock, is also Lasqueti's tiny commercial centre, and the gateway to a paddler's paradise of coves, offshore reefs, islets and islands.

Lasqueti is a quaint community, full of eccentric characters. Artists, musicians, carvers, farmers, loggers, fishermen, writers, jewelers, contractors and caterers have all made their home here. It is truly a pioneering way of life. The winters are peaceful and serene with beautiful colours and epic storms. The spring and summer is bustling with off-island visitors and many local events including the Spring Fling Weekend, The Firemen's picnic, and The Arts and Poetry Festival weekend.

The roads are unpaved and the island has no public transportation. There are no public campgrounds. Lasqueti residents have rallied against B.C. Hydro in the past and remain independent and off-the-grid to this day. Residents live either without electricity or with alternative sources of power like solar or micro-hydro. Years ago, fishing and logging were more prevalent industries, but these days there is very little bustling economy.

Real estate on Lasqueti can range from $80,000 (co-ownership) to over $2,000,000.00 for amazing ocean or lakefront property. There is a 10-acre freeze on Lasqueti and that is the average size piece of land. Some 1-acre pieces do not come up for sale that often and were created before the 10-acre freeze came into effect.

It is safe to say, life on Lasqueti is a self-sustainable way of life and living, where homesteaders enjoy the mild climate and relative isolation.
